Introduction to Yunnan Tea Industry (Around  Words)

Yunnan is the core origin area of wild tea trees worldwide, owning China’s largest, most diversified and ecologically superiortea industrial cluster. Benefiting from the three-dimensionalplateau terrain of Gaoligong Mountain, Wumeng Mountain and HengduanMountain Ranges, Yunnan produces four mainstream tea categories:ancient large-leaf tea, alpine black tea (Dianhong), ecologicalgreen tea and ripe Pu’er tea. The industrial chain covers improvedseed breeding, under-forest ecological cultivation, traditionalhand-made primary processing, standardized deep processing, domestic distribution and cross-border export trade, making tea acore foreign trade agricultural product of Yunnan plateaucharacteristic agriculture. The major tea belts include Puchuan ofTengchong, Changning, Lincang, Pu’er and Xishuangbanna. Distinctaltitudes create staggered tea picking seasons, with spring, summerand autumn tea harvested in turn to realize year-round stablesupply. Massive volumes of ecological tea are exported to SoutheastAsia, the Middle East, Europe and America via border ports, servingas a cultural business card spreading oriental tea culture to theworld.

Original unique ecology creates exclusive flavor characteristicsof Yunnan tea. Most tea gardens in Yunnan are located at altitudesfrom 1,200 to 2,000 meters. Weathered volcanic soil is rich inselenium, zinc and organic matter, loose enough to allow deep rootgrowth of large-leaf tea trees. With forest coverage exceeding 70%in mountainous regions, tea trees grow mixed with arbors and fruittrees to form natural under-forest tea plantations shrouded in mistall year round. Diffused soft light slows tea growth, enabling budsto accumulate abundant amino acids, tea polyphenols and aromaticsubstances. The brewed tea liquor tastes fresh, mild with lastingsweet aftertaste and low astringency, fitting drinking habits ofconsumers all over the world. Far away from industrial zones, alltea gardens adopt mountain spring irrigation and standardized greencultivation systems. Manual weeding, sticky insect boards andinsecticidal lamps replace chemical pesticides, while fallen leavesand farm manure substitute chemical fertilizers. Pesticide residueindexes of fresh tea leaves are far below import thresholds set bythe EU and ASEAN. Numerous plantations have obtained green foodcertification, organic certification and GLOBALG.A.P certification, bringing great advantages for customs clearance during export. Overone million ancient tea trees aged more than one hundred yearsscatter across Yunnan, some over one thousand years old. Ancienttree tea contains rich layered internal substances, acting aspremium raw materials for high-end gift tea and export boutiquetea.

Diversified tea varieties meet full-scenario market demands athome and abroad. Yunnan large-leaf tea boasts strong processingadaptability, and different manufacturing crafts produce fourbest-selling tea products. Pu’er tea is divided into raw Pu’er andripe Pu’er. Raw Pu’er carries fresh floral aroma, can be storedlong-term and improves in taste over years, popular among teacollectors in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Europe andAmerica. Ripe Pu’er undergoes artificial pile fermentation, delivering mild and mellow liquor friendly to stomach, suitable fordaily drinking and beverage raw materials. Dianhong, a classicexport black tea made of spring buds with one leaf or two leaves,is covered with golden fine hairs with rich honey fragrance andbright red tea soup, exported in bulk to overseas supermarkets andchain beverage stores for decades. Alpine ecological green tea andcharacteristic Mogu tea from Puchuan retain natural fresh fragrancewith sweet lingering taste, mainly supplied for border wholesaleand daily affordable tea. Beyond loose raw tea, the industrialchain extends to tea bags, freeze-dried tea powder, tea extracts, gift sets and cultural packages printed with ethnic patterns.Manufacturers support bulk raw material orders, OEM privatelabeling and customized Chinese-English bilingual packaging, providing one-stop purchasing solutions for overseas wholesalers, gift dealers and beverage enterprises.

Complete industrial chain supports large-scale production andcross-border trade. All major tea producing areas in Yunnan aree with standardized dust-free processing workshopsintegrating intangible cultural heritage tea-making crafts andmodern intelligent sorting e Unified grading standardsalign with international norms covering seedling cultivation, basemanagement, fresh leaf purchasing, fixation, rolling, fermentation, drying, screening and tea cake pressing. Ten-thousand-tonconstant-temperature tea warehouses are built across producingregions for long-term storage of post-fermented tea such as Pu’er,ensuring balanced shipment all year round. Supported by exclusivegreen customs channels for agricultural products at first-classports including Houqiao, Mohan and Ruili, RCEP tariff reductionpolicies plus multi-modal transport of China-Laos Railway coldchain trains and border highways greatly accelerate customsclearance and cut cross-border logistics costs. Enterprises canprovide complete certificates of origin, phytosanitary certificatesand batch pesticide residue test reports to smoothly pass globalgreen trade barriers. Domestically, products cover national teawholesale markets, online e-commerce and offline physical stores.Internationally, the industry deeply cultivates Southeast Asianmarkets such as Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, while steadilyexpanding high-end tea consumption markets in the Middle East,Japan, South Korea and Europe, realizing balanced development ofdomestic and overseas sales.

Inheritance of Tea Horse Road culture strengthens differentiatedcompetitiveness for tea exports. Yunnan is the starting point ofthe ancient Southern Tea Horse Road, with thousands of years of teaplanting and processing history passed down by Dai, Blang, Wa andHan ethnic groups. Intangible heritage handcraft tea production, bamboo tube tea and roasted tea carry unique regional folk customs.Local tea workshops and enterprises integrate landscape elements ofmisty Gaoligong tea mountains, horse caravans and ethnic patternsinto export packages, creating premium tea gifts combining drinkingvalue and cultural connotation. The tea industry continuouslyraises stable income for mountain villagers by offering jobs in teapicking, processing and packaging, boosting rural revitalization. In the future, Yunnan tea industry will continuously expand theconstruction of organic standardized tea gardens, upgradedeep-processing production lines and optimize cross-border supplychain layout. Adhering to ecological cultivation, traditionalcraftsmanship, compliant and honest operation, Yunnan tea willfurther improve export and efficiency, spreading thedistinctive aroma of plateau large-leaf tea to every corner of theglobe.
