pla is one of the most commonly produced bioplastics today. as arenewably sourced biobased material that is certifiedcompostable according to en 13432:2000, pla is a popular andfamiliar choice in a host of applications.

pla iseasily processable on all standard processing e and issuitable for food contact and cosmetics packagingapplications. its drawbacks, however, are equally well known: plahas poor mechanical and thermal properties. its low impactresistance, brittleness and low thermal degradation temperature(55°c) have long served to hamper its use in higher-endapplications. 
for some years, heat-resistant pla grades offering a thermalstability up to 120°c have been available on the market, althoughin injection molding, their use comes at a price: the significantlyhigher cycle times mean a loss off productivity, compared to anonmodified pla.
biopolynov, natureplast ‘s research subsidiary has successfullydeveloped and is now introducing two new pla grades - plht 201 andplht 202 - that overcome these problems. the new grades arecharacterized by improved mechanical and thermal properties ascompared to standard pla, and improved productivity as compared toexisting heat-resistant pla grades, all at a competitive price.trials showed gains in cycle times varying from 30% up to over200%, depending on the parts injected.
according to natureplast, the properties of pl ht 202 arecomparable, or even superior (in terms of thermal and impactresistance) to those of a conventional technical material, such asabs. the company claims that the new pl ht grades can also be usedto replace traditional high-impact ps, as they offer an over 40%higher impact strength. 
as a result of these improved properties, applications in areassuch as the automotive industry and electronic consumer goods arenow opening up that had up until now not been possible. 
since 2006, natureplast has been the only company in europe thatcan supply bioplastics from all around the world from a hundreddifferent producers. its subsidiary biopolynov, founded in 2010 isstill the only r&d european center dedicated to these newmaterials. (kl)
