Western Yunnan centers on Baoshan, Tengchong, Longling andChangning, backed by the world-class ecological barrier of theGaoligong Mountains, three-dimensional climate of the Nu Riverdry-hot valley and selenium-rich volcanic soil. It is a uni cluster integrating high-mountain ecological tea andpremium small-grain coffee in China. As a core origin ofthousand-year-old Yunnan tea and the birthplace of large-scalesmall-grain coffee cultivation in China, Western Yunnan relies onnatural endowments, industrial heritage, border foreign trade andagriculture-culture-tourism integration to form a distinctivedual-industry development model, serving as a key pillar forsouthwest agricultural exports under the RCEP framework.
Western Yunnan boasts irreplaceable natural conditions perfectlysuitable for both tea and coffee cultivation. Located along theglobal golden planting belt between 24°N and 25°N, the regioncovers an altitude range of 600–1900 meters. The low-latitudehigh-altitude terrain brings abundant scattered sunlight, hugeday-night temperature gaps and long foggy seasons. The GaoligongMountains block air currents and form a unique dry-winter andwet-summer microclimate. Volcanic weakly acidic sandy soil is richin selenium, zinc and organic matter, reducing reliance on chemicalfertilizers and perfectly fitting the growth of large-leaf teatrees and Arabica coffee beans. Cloud-shrouded highland tea gardensin Tengchong and Changning slow down tea growth and enrich aminoacids and aromatic substances, producing high- wok-roastedgreen tea, Changning black tea and ancient tree Pu’er tea. Dry-hotvalleys in Lujiangba and Longling are frost-free all year round, cultivating Baoshan small-grain coffee with its signature taste:rich but not bitter, aromatic but not overpowering, with gentlefruit acidity. It ranks top in Yunnan in premium ratio and deepprocessing rate. Free from heavy industrial pollution, the regionadopts under-forest planting, physical pest control and naturalcomposting, meeting EU and Southeast Asian food safety standardsand laying a solid foundation for cross-border exports.
Centuries of planting and processing history have built acomplete industrial chain. Western Yunnan is renowned as a land ofancient tea, with large ancient tea tree communities in Changningand century-old wok-roasting craftsmanship in Puchuan, Tengchong. It masters mature processingues for green tea, Dianhongblack tea and Pu’er tea, combining traditional handcrafts withmodern sterile production lines to balance original flavor andexport standardization. Coffee industrialization started in the1950s as the origin of New China’s coffee industry. Over sevendecades, numerous standardized bases, coffee estates and roastingfactories have been built across Lujiangba and Longling, growingpremium varieties including Typica, Bourbon and Gesha. The fullindustrial chain covers seed breeding, cherry processing, deeproasting, cold brew and drip coffee products, supporting both bulkraw material export and branded finished goods supply. WesternYunnan owns over 660,000 mu of tea plantations and 180,000 mu ofcoffee fields with export filing certification, ensuring stablelarge-volume supply for overseas bulk orders, sample procurementand OEM customization.
Border port advantages and RCEP policy dividends strengthencross-border trade competitiveness. Bordering Myanmar, WesternYunnan relies on ports such as Tengchong Houqiao with dedicatedgreen channels for agricultural exports, featuring fast customsclearance and low logistics costs. Flexible border trade andon-site processing policies enable efficient land transportation toSoutheast Asia. Supported by RCEP tariff reductions and convenientcertificate of origin application, tea and coffee products areexported in large to Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Malaysiaand Vietnam, with expanding markets in Japan, South Korea, theMiddle East and Europe. Different from single-category exports inother regions, Western Yunnan supports combined tea-coffeeshipments for overseas beverage chains, supermarket gifts and rawmaterial factories. The off-season supply system ensures year-rounddelivery: spring highland tea hits the market early, while coffeeis exported in batches after autumn harvest.
The integration of agriculture, cultural tourism and wellnessboosts industrial added value. Western Yunnan combines tea gardensightseeing, coffee estate tours, volcanic hot spring wellness andethnic culture experiences, creating immersive seasonal travelexperiences. Tea and coffee evolve from simple agriculturalproducts into travel souvenirs and healthy dietary ingredients. With cultural creative packaging integrating local ethnic patternsand Gaoligong Mountain landscapes, bilingual gift boxes and exportcatalogs upgrade brand image and increase profit margins. In thefuture, Western Yunnan will focus on ecological planting, deepprocessing and global brand building, leverage its origins, portsand strengths to expand global market share, and build aworld-famous industrial brand of Western Yunnan tea and coffeefacing Southeast Asia and the whole world.
