UPS (NYSE:UPS) has completed its latest regional ground packagesortation and distribution hub, further facilitating commercebetween the Pacific Northwest and the world. The new facility alsosignificantly increases the UPS delivery fleet serving the greaterSeattle-Tacoma area, the largest metropolitan area in thenorthwestern United States. Adding 777,000 square feet of newautomation-driven processing capacity to UPS’s global network, thehub has created more than 800 full- and part-time jobs.
“The new Tacoma regional hub is yet another key addition tothe UPS global smart logistics network, allowing us to better servethe rapidly changing business and residential needs of ourcustomers in the Pacific Northwest,” said Joe Braham, president ofUPS’s Northwest District that covers six states. “UPS has a longhistory of being a partner in the economic growth of this region.Tacoma is a gateway to West Coast commerce as well as internationaltrade lanes.”
With 40 percent of jobs in the State of Washington related tointernational trade, Seattle-Tacoma area businesses of every sizeand industry can benefit from UPS international trade services.Convenient access to UPS contract logistics distributionfacilities, and multi-modal freight and customs brokerage servicescan be combined with innovative UPS technology solutions tosimplify the international shipping process.

Covering an area the size of more than 13 football fields, thenew Tacoma regional hub is powered by highly-automated technologythat rapidly moves packages through the scanning and sortingprocess, capturing data to increase delivery accuracy and addingflexibility to respond to customer needs. High speed UPS SmartLabel® applicators place labels on packages at a rate of three persecond, providing UPS employees instructions for proper routing andloading into waiting trailers headed to destinations across thecountry, or into package delivery vehicles bound for Tacoma-areabusinesses and residents.
Innovative technology provides increased speed, efficiency andflexibility to move packages within UPS facilities as well asthroughout the company’s smart global logistics network. AcrossNorth America, the company is implementing additional smallautonomous guided tow tractors or “tugs” to move large orirregularly-shaped packages within its hubs that are not able to bemoved on conveyor systems due to size, shape or weight. UPS’sproprietary Network Planning Tools (NPT) integrate UPS’s air andground operations across the U.S. and around the globe. NPT enablesUPS to reduce time-in-transit while efficiently managing spikes inshipping volume and severe weather.
UPS also recently opened a new package delivery facility inHillsboro, Ore. to serve the rapidly growing business andresidential demand in the surrounding Portland area. Both newpackage processing operations are part of UPS’s enterprise-widetransformation initiatives that will add more than 5.5uare feet of new automated sortation globally ahead of the 2020holiday season.
