冲击波是一种通过物理学介质传导的机械性脉冲震波，是压力急剧变化的产物。在短短的几纳秒内产生很高的和瞬间下降的压力幅度，这是冲击波独有的特性。压力急剧变化产生的冲击波具有很强的压应力和张应力，所以能够穿透任何弹性介质，如液体和软组织。早先的体外冲击波治疗仍采用传统的泌尿科碎石术eswl的聚焦型（压电式、液电式或电磁式）高能量硬式冲击波波源，设备依旧庞大、昂贵和复杂，对治疗的部位需要x线或超声定位，机器能量大，需要局部麻醉，治疗副作用多且明显，患者恢复期较长，临床也难以得到普及。
