functional tests e.g. in test-labs often require insulatedflexray, can- (controller area network) and lin-busses(local 

interconnect network) to control the device under test. for thispurpose special transceivers are available. they allow 

bidirectional data transmission of signals via fiber opticcables and can be used during susceptibility tests at highfield 

uite often these transceivers use enhanced filteringat the electrical bus connectors. this filtering affectssignals 

and may have major effect on emission tests. 

our emctools microbox was designed for emission andsusceptibility tests. using multilayer technology andsophisticated 

circuit design full can/lin compliance and the ability toperform tests at electromagnetic fields of 270v/m and abovecould 

be achieved. the handy plastic housing allows tests with limitedtest space. 

the emctools microbox uses standard multimode fiber optic cablesand allows direct connection to the electric bus (e.g. 

can-/lin-cab) via sub-d female connectors. 

in combination with a second microbox or one channel of ouremctools canbox a complete optical can/lin-bus connection 

can easily be arranged. 

it is possible to build mixed can/lin-bus lines with other fiberoptic can/lin transceiver products as described in 

“compatibility” in technical data below.

esd tests in test-labs often require galvanic insulated busseslike flexray, can- (controller area network) 

and lin-busses (local interconnect network) to control thedevice under test. for this purpose the emctools 

esd-protector and our standard fiber optic bus transceivers(microbox) are available. they allow bidirectional 

data transmission of can/lin-signals via fiber optic cables andcan be used during esd tests to protect 

computers or notebooks from the esd discharge. 

the combination of esd-protector and emctools microbox weredesigned for esd discharges up to 30kv 

(hbm).

the emctools multi bus tester simulates an automotive deviceunder test (dut) including cable harness and 

load-box inside and a separate stimulator outside the emcchamber. based on an analysis of commonly used 

bus systems in automotive tests, the emctools mbt provides thepossibility to test six different field bus systems: 

1. high speed can 

2. low speed can 

3. low speed single wire can

the mbt-set consists of a master and a slave unit, a loadsimulator with cable harness and includes cables for 

wiring. the slave unit (dut) controls 4 bulbs in a loadsimulator connected to the slave unit via a cable harness 

of approx. 190cm length acc. iso11451-2 immunity and cispr25emission standards. the slave unit requires a 

supply voltage of 9 – 15 volts from a symmetrical lisn (linestabilization network or artificial network) or 2 lisn 

(remote ground acc. iso 11452-2). 

the slave unit is controlled by a second device outside the emcchamber, the master unit. this master unit 

sends bus messages to switch on and off the lights on slave unitinside the emc chamber. the slave unit (dut) 

loops back the received bus messages to the master unit viafiber optic bus and the slave unit then activates 

leds on the master unit rear panel to show the proper functionof the slave unit (dut) and the fiber optic 

transmission and communication. 

the mbt master unit provides a trigger signal for “bus fail” and“error frames”.

introduction and use:

the emctools current sensor-set offers new possibilities inautomotive emc susceptibility tests. 

it provides a galvanic insulated dc current measurement for dutsupervision or failure detection. high rated measurement 

current and extreme low voltage drop come together with highresolution and good accuracy. the measurement head has 

been tested for field strength of >270v/m. 

the built in battery allows measurement in pos. or neg. batteryline. it can be recharged by connecting it to a usbconnector 

of any available pc or notebook. 

the current data is transferred to the control unit using astandard simplex fiber optic f-sma cable. 

the control unit displays the current on a display. a triggersignal can be generated to trigger oscilloscopes or to controlthe 

susceptibility test depending on various currentsituations. 

a can-bus interface provides the measured current permanently orwhen triggered on hs-can or ls-can. can-bus, canspeed andcan-identifier can be set individually. 

the measured current data is also available via usb. 

a built in usb to can interface can be used to send emc relateddata like test frequency or field strength etc. to canbus. 

all settings and options can be made locally using a menu rotaryswitch or via remote commands (usb). 

settings are stored in non volatile memory.
